More on Joy

So, what if we don't know how to find this joy the Bible talks about? We need, foremost, to begin a relationship with the giver of joy, Jesus. That is a simple prayer, “Lord, I have done wrong and need help. Please forgive me. I know you died for me and made a way for me to be reconciled to God. Thank You for Your plan to save me.” Done. The moment we believe and speak that to God, we begin a relationship that enables and fosters joy because joy is a fruit of God’s Spirit within us.

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls..” 1 Peter 1:8-9

Secondly, we need to begin to live in truth, not in emotion. Negative emotion sucks joy out of life. Unfortunately, many of us have a habit of leaning into negative emotions (anger, despair, depression, etc.) when troubles come our way. We let emotions drive the car, and emotions are lousy drivers! They keep us in the ditch on most days.

However, what if we let truth drive? What if, when adversity arrived, we spoke the words that God speaks about our circumstances? How would joy grow in that environment?

What the Bible says:

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength,

A very present help in trouble.

(Holman Bible)

Isaiah 40:31

Yet those who wait for the Lord

Will gain new strength;

They will mount up with wings like eagles,

They will run and not get tired,

They will walk and not become weary.

(Holman Bible)

In place of every emotional response, we would choose to believe God’s truth, and continually speak it. Joy grows in the soil of truth. If we choose to read and believe truth, we choose to have more joy. The more truth, the more the Spirit fills us with joy!

Romans 15:13-

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Lastly, realize the power of hope in your life. Hope thrives in an environment of joy, and joy fuels hope, a beacon that pulls our attention toward our current purpose in this life and our future promises in the next. No matter the storm, the Spirit of God can give us joy and hope to endure and buoy us up in the worst of days. So, even in the most violent of storms, we can rejoice.

Prayer: Lord, I have lost hope in Your ability to change my circumstances. Your Word tells me that joy is a fruit of the Spirit, and I am asking you to renew my hope in Your truth and grow the fruit of joy from the soil of my disappointment.
